Town Hall Hotel

The transformation of a Grade II listed town hall into an award-winning hotel in London’s East End

Architecture & Interiors

London, UK

Area: 9000m2

RIBA Award, RICS Award

We were approached by Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh to transform this neglected Grade II Edwardian Town Hall building in London’s Bethnal Green into a stylish 5-star hotel, with serviced apartments, conference facilities, bar and restaurant.

Our concept was to meticulously restore the building’s original features, grand staircases, moulded ceilings and marble floors, whilst providing an additional 1500m2 of accommodation in a contemporary extension to the roof and rear of the building.

Glamorous, elegant and functional, the hotel blends the use of traditional techniques and motifs with cutting edge design and manufacturing technologies and in 2020 celebrates ten years as a landmark on London’s hospitality map.

Throughout the project which had the full backing of English Heritage, traditional techniques and motifs are combined with a modern interpretation and cutting-edge technology, celebrating both old and new to offer guests a distinctive and authentic experience.

A finely detailed, faceted, laser-cut, aluminium screen, inspired by some of the beautiful Art Deco details of the building, wraps the new extension providing additional privacy for rooms, with dappled light and a strikingly modern, sculptural element visible from the street.

Working within the constraints of the building and its listed status, we undertook a strategic re-planning of the internal space to create 98 rooms each with a unique layout and design and carefully planned to maximise natural daylight.

Interiors have been designed with integrated ’spatial furniture’, bespoke pods of discrete beds, desks, storage, kitchens and bathrooms. Wherever possible original materials, including marble, glass, oak and stone have been re-used for their timeless and elegant qualities. Light fixtures were specially commissioned from Italian supplier Viabizzuno, to sit comfortably within the historical context.

“Their excellent service and professionalism, as well as an ability to meet tight deadlines and forge good relationships with planners never failed to impress me” – Loh Lik Peng.
