Londrino

A stylish restaurant for a Portuguese chef in London

Interior

London Bridge, London, UK

Area: 250m2

We were approached to design a new restaurant interior for Leandro Carreira’s first solo venture. Taking inspiration from his Portuguese heritage and cuisine, the design reflects delicacy, simplicity and craftsmanship to create a stylish 250m2 interior within the ground floor of a commercial unit in Bermondsey.

The blank shell has been transformed into a 100-cover bar and restaurant, A complex, partitioned layout was designed for maximum efficiency, accommodating a kitchen, storage, plant and back of house facilities. As much space as possible has been given over to revenue generating space.

Highly functional, yet warm and welcoming, Londrino set a new benchmark in restaurant design.

Rough concrete walls and high ceilings are left untouched and combined with a rich mix of materials and colours to create a unique interior. Hexagonal wooden marquetry spills are arranged to form a rear feature wall, extending seamlessly across the floor with a subtle change in colour gradient. Hand-made Portuguese tiles add texture to surfaces. Focusing the budget in areas that would have the greatest impact, we also designed bespoke tables, and eye-catching pieces such as a chandelier made from an old aeroplane engine.

Within a single space we managed to create an open kitchen, celebrating the theatre of food preparation, differentiating the bar from the restaurant space with distinct, separate lighting concepts. The restaurant is open during the day and evening so a further challenge was to create designs that might offer a different ambience depending on layout, materials, lighting and furniture.

“ I was wondering what would be new in restaurant design, I walked in and I found the answer.”
