NAME created this set for the 2019 edition of Sleep & Eat exploring the theme of social flexibility and celebrating our social impulses in all their variety. A bespoke table is designed to create a continuous, adaptable plane which accommodates a variety of spatial and social interactions.
‘Where Do You Sit?’ defines different social spaces, and shapes their use. Guests at the table activate the social experience of their choosing depending where they decide to sit.

Our design provided ultimate flexibility within a single 9m x 4m spatial setting, exploring the individual’s desire for privacy, intimacy, proximity or inclusion within a social group.
The continuous plane of the table features a series of cut-outs made by a single ellipsis, to create a range of distances between one side of the table and another. The variable between guests enables different degrees of social interactions – ranging from the intimate vis-à-vis of a Parisian bistro, to a more self-determined privacy, to the long view of the observer or the shared space enjoyed by a group of friends.
Chairs, colours and table accessories subtly emphasize the individual nature of the interactions and blend into a harmonious and elegant overall design. Table lamps have been designed in the French tradition of a surtout de table; an ornamental centrepiece, both functional and decorative which can hold candles or condiments. Designed to reflect the concept of social flexibility, each light is directed towards a seat, providing individual lighting which combine to create a communal centrepiece.
