Wood House

An ingenious reconfiguration of space to create contemporary living conditions

Interior

Paris, France

Area: 120m2

Our clients lived in a Parisian apartment, previously owned by an antique dealer who had created a large Empire style room, lined with beautiful wooden panels and marquetry. This 40sqm space, used as the parents’ bedroom, was completely disproportionate to the overall size of the flat – with a small kitchen and bathroom to be shared by the family. Our brief was to completely reconfigure the layouts to accommodate their growing family and lifestyle whilst preserving the Hausmanian cachet of the original flat.

By creating more proportionate rooms we were able to add a third bedroom and shower room. Opening an arch between the unaltered living room and a new kitchen brought daylight into the living area from two directions.

The contrast created between the new insertions and the existing features enhance the latter and provide the apartment with a fresh outlook on its classical charm, creating dialogue and continuity between old and new.

The new interventions are contemporary in both materials and design, with the selection of intemporal materials such as oak and marble providing a sense of classic continuity to the modern design.

We retained much of the original wooden ornamentation on the walls, but incorporated new bespoke joinery to increase practical storage space, whilst respecting the original charm of the space.
